About SCC

History:
Syracuse University (SU) partnered with a resident group on the South Side of Syracuse in October 2005 and created The Southside Community Coalition (SCC). The partnership between SCC and SU is directed by the Syracuse University South Side Initiative (SU SSI). The SCC consists of community residents working with SU on neighborhood projects. The purpose of the SCC is to restore and rejuvenate the community through revitalization initiatives that build resident capacity for self-sufficiency while promoting economic and cultural opportunities for residents of the South Side.

In January 2006 SU established the Faculty for Community Engagement to support the South Side revitalization campaign. The Faculty for Community Engagement consists of SU faculty members, staff and graduate students who work on SU SSI projects. Members from the SCC are partnered with members from the Faculty for Community Engagement, working together as co-project managers to build community capacity.

The partnership between SCC and SU focuses on the sustainable revitalization of the South Side of Syracuse, concentrating on the development of South Salina Street from Colvin Street to Brighton Avenue.
